Though common in informal communication, alot is not a dictionary-recognized word, and it’s generally considered out of place in formal writing. If you want to be safe, make it two words—a lot.
No one is saying you can’t use alot in your emails, texts, and web comments. But the two-word form is always used in edited writing. For example, you would never see alotin these publications:
For the head of a multibillion-dollar hedge fund, James G. Dinan worries a lot about the fate of the industry’s littlest players. [New York Times]
There is a lot of Berlin to discover. [Guardian]
That’s been happening a lot lately in eastern Montgomery County. [Washington Post]
Alot might someday gain acceptance. English does have a strong compounding impulse. But for now, careful writers use a lot.
